Itinerary
Day 1 :
Arrival in Aurangabad & Local Exploration
Aurangabad
Arrive in Aurangabad, the nearest city with good rail and air connectivity. Check in to your hotel and freshen up. Begin your local sightseeing with a visit to Bibi Ka Maqbara, often referred to as the 'Mini Taj Mahal'. Then explore Panchakki (an ancient water mill) and Aurangabad Caves, a lesser-known but beautiful site carved into the hillside. In the evening, relax at your hotel or explore local markets for handicrafts and Himroo shawls. Overnight stay in Aurangabad.
Bibi Ka Maqbara:
Bibi Ka Maqbara is a stunning Mughal-era monument built in the 17th century by Azam Shah in memory of his mother, Dilras Banu Begum. Often referred to as the "Mini Taj Mahal," it resembles the iconic Taj in Agra and stands as a symbol of Mughal architecture in the Deccan. Surrounded by gardens and fountains, it offers a peaceful and photogenic atmosphere, especially during the monsoon when the backdrop turns lush and green.
Aurangabad Caves:
The Aurangabad Caves are a group of 12 rock-cut Buddhist caves located just outside the city. Dating back to the 6th–7th centuries, these caves are carved into soft basalt rock and feature intricate sculptures, chaitya halls, and depictions of Buddhist deities and mythology. Less crowded than Ajanta and Ellora, they offer a quieter and more intimate exploration of early Buddhist art and architecture, with panoramic views of the city from the hilltop.
Day 2 :
Explore Ajanta Caves
Aurangabad
In the morning after an early breakfast, embark on a full-day excursion to the Ajanta Caves, located about 100 km from Aurangabad. These 2nd-century BC Buddhist caves are famous for their exquisite wall paintings, sculptures, and chaityas (prayer halls). Nestled in a horseshoe-shaped gorge, the lush monsoon setting adds to the spiritual and scenic atmosphere. Return to Aurangabad in the evening for dinner and overnight stay.
Ajanta Caves:
The Ajanta Caves are a world-renowned UNESCO World Heritage Site, consisting of 30 rock-cut Buddhist cave monuments dating from the 2nd century BCE to around the 6th century CE. Carved into a horseshoe-shaped cliff along the Waghora River, these caves are famous for their exquisite ancient murals, frescoes, and sculptures depicting the life of Buddha and various Jataka tales. The caves served as monasteries and prayer halls for Buddhist monks and are considered masterpieces of Indian religious art.
Day 3 :
Visit Ellora Caves & Departure
Aurangabad
In the morning after breakfast and hotel check-out, head to the Ellora Caves, located just 30 km from Aurangabad. These caves include Buddhist, Hindu, and Jain monuments, with Kailasa Temple (Cave 16) being the highlight—a massive rock-cut structure dedicated to Lord Shiva. Also visit Grishneshwar Temple, one of the 12 Jyotirlingas, , if time permits. After sightseeing, transfer to Aurangabad railway station or airport for your return journey.
