Your Sandakphu adventure begins when you arrive at New Jalpaiguri Railway Station or Bagdogra Airport. After a warm welcome, you’ll be driven to Manebhanjan, a small hill town that serves as the base for your trek. The scenic drive takes around 3-4 hours, offering glimpses of tea gardens, winding roads, and the distant Himalayas. On arrival at Manebhanjan, check in at your pre-booked lodge. After refreshing yourself, take some time to relax, soaking in the tranquil atmosphere of the foothills, before getting ready for the trek ahead. You’ll spend the night in Manebhanjan, resting up for the upcoming days of adventure.
In the morning after breakfast, your trek officially begins as you set off from Manebhanjan towards Tonglu. This 11 km stretch will take you through beautiful forests of rhododendrons, oaks, and pines, with occasional clearings offering stunning views of the surrounding mountains. The trek takes about 6-7 hours, so it’s a moderate but rewarding day on the trail. Upon reaching Tonglu, check into a local trekking lodge. The village offers spectacular views of the towering peaks of Kanchenjunga and Everest, so take your time to enjoy the surroundings before a restful overnight stay.
Kanchenjunga:
Kanchenjunga is the third-highest mountain in the world, standing at an impressive 8,586 meters (28,169 feet) above sea level. Located on the India-Nepal border, it is part of the Himalayan Mountain range and is revered for its breathtaking beauty and spiritual significance. The name Kanchenjunga means "The Five Treasures of Snow," referring to its five primary peaks, which are associated with the five treasures of Hindu belief: gold, silver, gems, grain, and sacred books.
Day 3 is the most challenging and exciting of the trek, as you make your way to Sandakphu, the highest point in West Bengal, standing at 12,310 feet. The trail from Tonglu to Sandakphu spans 11 km and takes around 7-8 hours. The ascent is steep in places, but the magnificent vistas of the Everest, Kangchenjunga, Makalu, and Lhotse ranges will keep you motivated. Along the way, you’ll pass through charming villages like Gairibas and Kalapokhri. When you finally reach Sandakphu, check into a guesthouse or trekkers' hut and enjoy a warm meal while taking in the breathtaking panoramic views of the snow-capped peaks. Spend the night in Sandakphu, marveling at the awe-inspiring mountain scenery.
Day 4 is dedicated to rest at Sandakphu, allowing you to enjoy the beauty of this majestic mountain region. After a leisurely breakfast, you can spend the day exploring the area. You might want to take a short trek to Phalut, which offers equally stunning views, or you could simply relax and take in the vistas of the highest peaks in the world. Sandakphu is known for its crystal-clear skies, and the views at sunrise and sunset are unforgettable. You can also visit the local Sandakphu Monastery and interact with the locals. After a day of exploration and relaxation, you’ll stay overnight in your guesthouse, immersed in the peaceful surroundings.
Sandakphu Monastery:
The Sandakphu Monastery is a small, serene Buddhist monastery located at Sandakphu, the highest point in West Bengal, India, at an altitude of 12,310 feet. Situated in the Singalila National Park, this monastery holds significant spiritual and cultural importance for both locals and trekkers. The monastery is a place of peace and tranquillity, offering visitors a quiet retreat amidst the stunning natural beauty of the Himalayan range. It is primarily associated with Tibetan Buddhism and is home to a few monks who follow the Buddhist way of life.
On Day 5, it’s time to begin your descent. After breakfast, you’ll start your trek back down to Manebhanjan, covering around 13-14 km in about 6-7 hours. The descent is easier than the ascent but still offers beautiful views of the mountains, forests, and valleys along the way. Upon reaching Manebhanjan, your driver will be waiting to take you back to Bagdogra. The drive takes approximately 3-4 hours, and you’ll check in at your hotel in Bagdogra for an overnight stay. Relax and unwind after your trek in preparation for your departure the next day.
After breakfast, check out from your hotel and proceed to New Jalpaiguri Railway Station or Bagdogra Airport for your onward journey, bringing your memorable Sandakphu trekking experience to a close.
